Urban green spaces are vital for environmental quality, but their maintenance requires continuous water consumption. Given water resource constraints and climatic challenges, accurate estimation of the water requirement of these spaces has gained strategic importance and has become a key factor in the economic management of urban water resources. In this regard, the aim of the present study is to estimate the water requirement of urban green spaces based on climatic data and to propose optimization strategies for water consumption management in Minoodasht. This applied research was conducted using a mixed-method approach (quantitative-qualitative). Data were collected from library sources, the meteorological station, field surveys, and interviews. In the quantitative section, the water requirement of Minoodasht green spaces was estimated using the FAO-Penman-Monteith method and the Mann-Kendall test, while in the qualitative section, water consumption optimization strategies were developed using grounded theory and interviews with 12 experts. The results indicate that Minoodasht climate, with an annual precipitation of 689.5mm and evaporation of 1246.7 mm, has a negative moisture balance, and 139 hot days along with 2390 sunny hours exacerbate thermal stress. The Mann-Kendall trend analysis reveals a significant increase in mean temperature(Z=+2.45)and hot days(Z=+2.89),alongside a non-significant decrease in precipitation, portraying a warmer and more water-scarce future for urban green spaces. The water requirement estimation shows that grass with a crop coefficient of 0.95–1.10 has the highest consumption, while native shrubs with0.40–0.50have the lowest; such that with an irrigation efficiency of 70%, supplying57 m³ of water per day per hectare of grass is essential. Meanwhile, the six strategies including vegetation composition optimization, technical efficiency enhancement, institutional development, incentive policies, water resource diversification, and capacity building and cultural promotion have all been designed with a focus on economic incentives to reduce dependence on costly water resources by lowering maintenance, pumping, and water extraction costs.
