The spatial monitoring of land use changes in the metropolis of Tabriz is a crucial topic for understanding the dynamics of urban growth and sustainable planning. This process plays a key role in comprehending urban expansion and development, identifying unbalanced growth patterns, and assessing the impacts of these changes on the environment and natural resources. This study utilized Landsat-5 TM, Landsat-8 OLI, and Landsat-9 OLI satellite imagery, along with Geographic Information Systems (GIS), to analyze land use changes in Tabriz in the years 1991, 2001, 2011, and 2023. Land use maps derived from supervised spectral classification of remote sensing data from Landsat images revealed that over a span of 32 years, built-up areas increased by approximately 28%, primarily at the expense of prime agricultural lands.Analysis of spatial patterns of land use changes indicates that the highest average rate of increase in built-up areas occurred in region 5, with an entropy value of -0.25, reflecting significant changes in land use patterns. Results from the Holdren model for the metropolis of Tabriz indicate that 31.88% of urban expansion is due to population growth, while 68.11% is attributed to unbalanced and sprawl development. This clearly highlights that spatial growth in Tabriz has predominantly occurred through unplanned expansion. As a result, there has been a significant increase in built-up land area and a concurrent reduction in water and agricultural resources, which is likely to lead to future environmental crises. These findings underscore the necessity of comprehensive and sustainable planning to ensure balanced development and environmental protection in Tabriz.
