An Examination of Local Community Perceptions Regarding the Implementation of Community-Based Tourism in Rural Regions (Case study: Tourism destination villages of Markazi Province)

Abstract
In recent years, community-based tourism (CBT) has provided significant benefits in rural areas by engaging local communities in the tourism process. This applied research, conducted in 2023, aimed to assess the extent of CBT realization in the target tourist villages of Markazi province, Iran. The study employed a descriptive-survey method, gathering data through documentary review and fieldwork. The statistical population included all 25 target tourist villages in the province. Based on the opinions of 15 tourism experts and university professors, the villages with the highest tourist attraction and potential were selected for the study. A sample size of 325 individuals was determined using Cochran's formula. Reliability was confirmed using Cronbach’s alpha (α=0.760) in SPSS 24, and validity was qualitatively assessed through the consensus of 15 experts. The findings showed that the CBT components were realized to varying degrees: Foundational factors (eigenvalue=2.334), economic and business development (eigenvalue=1.220), social and participatory factors (eigenvalue=0.857), physical-environmental factors (eigenvalue=0.448), and finally, managerial-institutional factors (eigenvalue=0.142). The results indicate a lack of structured management and planning for developing community-based tourism in the target tourist villages of Markazi province.
